Why EMFs Are the Cigarettes of the 21st Century
You may be wondering: If EMFs are so bad, why isn’t anybody doing something to stop them – and the explosive number of devices using the potentially harmful technology?
Ironically, the answer can be found in the history of cigarettes and the tobacco industry.
It’s easy to forget that the tobacco industry adopted a policy of silence and denial of the overwhelming science showing how harmful cigarettes were to health — and held firm to this tactic for decades.
Largely due to highly effective public relations strategies, it took 50 years for the government to finally require strict regulations and warnings on cigarettes.
It's not much different with today's wireless industry. They're following the tobacco industry's playbook and using the same public relations strategies that worked brilliantly back in the 1950s, except this time they've captured the federal regulatory agencies responsible for protecting you.
Key industry players have even hired the same PR firm to recreate the strategies of:
- Paying handpicked industry-friendly researchers to perform biased studies to dispute scientific findings
- Spending millions to sway legislators through lobbying efforts
- Creating conflicts of interest by financing their own studies
- Funding studies of questionable design (i.e., using simulated EMF exposure instead of real cell phones)
- Broadcasting the message that the science is inconclusive (by mixing in the faux results of industry-sponsored studies to muddy the scientific waters)
- Smearing scientists who find problems with cell phones and 5G technologies to sow seeds of doubt in the public’s mind
At the same time 5G appears to be closing in on us like a runaway freight train, there is some light at the end of the tunnel — as dim as it may be.
Around the world, select cities are raising red flags and trying to slow down the rollout of 5G. Even some American cities and states are fighting back.
I’m not suggesting we go back to pre-Wi-Fi days. We do need more reliable and faster service for all Americans. But it doesn’t need to be a technology that hundreds of independent studies have shown is harmful to the health of all living beings. There are safer and even faster alternatives.
While there is a safe and effective alternative to 5G (I describe it in “EMF*D”), all indications show the wireless industry won’t embrace it. The industry has deep pockets and the new technology is just too profitable to walk away from — even if it devastates human, animal, plant and bacterial life.

There’s no question wireless EMFs are unsafe. A working group of nearly 30 scientists appointed by the National Institute of Environmental Health Services (NIEHS) carried out important research after Congress passed the Energy Policy Act in 1992.
In 1998, NIEHS produced a 532-page report in which the experts voted 19 to 9 in favor of designating EMFs as a “possible carcinogen.” As you can imagine, that decision created much backlash, spurring yet another 10-year, $30 million, 13-country study.
The Interphone Study looked specifically at the effects of cell phone radiation and its potential role in brain cancer.
The results of this study were interesting indeed…
While they reported “inconclusive” results and no overall increased risk of brain tumors for cell phone users, they found that “heavy users” — or those using their cell phones for more than two hours per month — had an approximately 80% greater risk of glioma, a life-threatening and often-fatal brain tumor, after 10 years of cell phone use.
A review of the data finally landed cell phone radiation exposure a “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” or Group 2B classification, the same category as the pesticide DDT, lead, gasoline engine exhaust, burning coal and dry-cleaning chemicals.
20 Years Ago I First Learned About the Dangers of EMFs, but Didn't Want to Limit My Access to the Wonderful Convenience of Wireless

I have embraced technology for over 50 years since I took my first computer programming course. So, when I first started hearing about the adverse effects of wireless, the last thing I wanted to do was limit my access. A part of me just wasn’t fully convinced.
The U.S. government first published documents acknowledging the harmful effects of EMFs nearly 50 years ago, from both the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Naval Medical Research Institute.

So, what was it that caused me to not only change my thinking and habits, but also write a book?
Once I understood how EMFs were impacting my body's function, I realized I had to take action.
And I knew I had to help prepare as many people as I could for the oncoming, exponential unleashing of EMFs from not only 5G but also the countless new wireless devices coming onto the market.

Depending on where you live, 5G may or may not have been deployed. As I said earlier, we don’t fully know what to expect once 5G is unleashed, but we do know plenty about how EMFs in general affect health.
And it all has to do with the calcium levels in your cells and the channels that allow calcium to flow in and out…
Calcium is an essential mineral for health. About 98% of your body's calcium is used to keep your bones and teeth strong, supporting your skeletal structure and function.
But calcium plays other equally important roles in your body, including cell signaling, muscle contraction, cell growth, nerve function, blood clotting, and learning and memory.
The role calcium plays as a biological signaling molecule is what's affected by EMF exposure.
EMFs damage cells by increasing calcium levels inside your cells, which leads to increased cellular oxidative stress.
Recent studies confirm EMF exposure leads to increased calcium inside your cells that catalyzes a cascade of events that trigger increased oxidative stress in your body.
On a molecular level, the excess calcium released inside your cells causes an enormous increase in both nitric oxide and superoxide, which spontaneously combine to form one of the most damaging molecules in your body — peroxynitrite.
Once formed, peroxynitrite attacks key molecules that damage your cells, including your DNA, and can cause disease, especially cancer, and leads to premature death by decreasing one of the most important molecules in your body, NAD+.
By the way — humans aren't the only species with channels that allow calcium to flow in and out of cells – and, hence, aren't the only ones affected by EMF exposure. Your pets have calcium channels. And so do your houseplants and the food crops in your garden and in every field around the world.
In fact, EMFs affect everything with DNA, including insects and even microbes.
10 Unseen Ways EMFs Can Adversely Affect Your Health
The development of specific diseases from electromagnetic exposure starts with subtle shifts in your body — many you may not even notice or attribute to EMFs.
Yet research has confirmed that EMFs contribute to many diseases. Here are just some of the documented ways:
- 1Cataracts — The development of cataracts (in the capsule of the eye rather than the membrane surrounding the lens, where age-related cataracts tend to form) are linked to low-grade microwave frequencies.
- 2Leaky gut and inflammatory bowel diseases (such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis) — EMFs compromise the integrity of your intestinal tract, allowing toxins and foreign proteins to enter your bloodstream, which can lead to chronic inflammation and contribute to arthritis, heart disease, autoimmune conditions and brain toxin overload.
- 3The leaching of mercury from “silver” or amalgam fillings — Radiation from a cell phone can heat pockets of saliva in your mouth, creating “hot spots” that cause the mercury in the amalgam to leak and readily enter your brain.
- 4Increased toxic load in your brain — Your blood-brain barrier protects your brain from toxins, pollutants, viruses and bacteria, but EMF exposure can actually poke holes in that barrier.
- 5Neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) — When your brain’s calcium channels are overactivated, excess free radicals can damage brain and nerve cells.
- 6Cancer (including brain cancer, breast cancer and childhood leukemia) — One of the probable links between EMFs and cancer is the increase in oxidative stress and its contribution to mitochondrial dysfunction, a major cause of DNA damage and cancer.
- 7Cardiac arrhythmias — Your heart has one of the highest densities of calcium channels and is therefore highly sensitive to EMFs, which can trigger a fast or slow or irregular heartbeat.
- 8Blood pressure problems — Using a cell phone can lead to a 5 –10 milligram Hg rise in blood pressure.
- 9Neuropsychiatric illnesses (such as anxiety, depression, hostility and difficulty concentrating) – Like your heart, your brain also has a high density of calcium channels and a high sensitivity to EMFs. EMFs can upset the delicate balance of your neurotransmitters and affect mood, sleep, memory and mental health.
- 10 Infertility — A man’s genitals have a very high density of calcium channels that make them sensitive to EMFs. Exposure to wireless radiation reduces sperm mobility, total sperm count, viability and quality.
How Can You Tell If EMFs Are Impacting Your Health?
One of the most obvious signs that EMFs may be affecting your well-being is not sleeping as well as you once did.
Extremely low frequency EMFs — like those emitted from power plants and electric wiring — and cell phone radio frequencies have been shown to impair sleep.
EMFs affect your brain in two ways that can disrupt sleep:
- Excite your brain’s cortical region, making it harder for you to relax into sleep
- Reduce your melatonin levels, the hormone essential for a healthy circadian rhythm and restorative deep sleep
Instead of, or in addition to poor sleep, maybe you're noticing a ringing in your ears, or tinnitus. Humming or ringing in the ears is another common symptom of EMF hypersensitivity. It too can impact your sleep.
Most people who suffer from tinnitus have no idea it may be related to their EMF exposure. However, ears are highly susceptible to EMFs and tinnitus may be an early indication that EMFs are damaging the cells inside your inner ear, or cochlea.
Not only is there a confirmed link between tinnitus and electrohypersensitivity, there’s evidence that EMFs influence your brain function and nerve processing in your brain’s auditory system.
Other common signs of EMFs exposure sensitivity include:
- Anxiety and depression
- Vision and hearing issues
- Cognitive dysfunction, including lack of concentration and focus
- Memory changes
- Tension and restlessness
Certainly, many of the above symptoms can be associated with other conditions, but by following the simple steps I provide in “EMF*D,” you can rule out electromagnetic frequency as the primary cause.
Why Children Are Especially at Risk of Damage from EMFs
As dangerous as EMFs are to adults, animals, plants, bees and microbes, they pose an exceptional risk for children for several reasons:
- Children will be exposed to EMFs for a much longer time than adults.
- Children under 12 years of age have higher body water content than adults, which allows them to absorb considerably more radiation.
- A child’s bone marrow absorbs 10 times more wireless radiation than an adult’s.
- Because a child’s skull is thinner, more cell phone radiation can penetrate deeply into the brain.
- Children’s still-developing brains (until their teens) are more susceptible to radiation absorption.
- A child’s developing nervous system is potentially more susceptible to a damaging agent.
Many soon-to-be parents don't realize that exposure to cell phone radiation begins in utero. But it's not just cell phone radiation…
Researchers have found that pregnant women with higher magnetic field exposure from all sources (as measured by meters they carried for 24 hours) had a 2.72 times higher risk of miscarriage.
Plus, their babies were more likely to have asthma, suffer from thyroid problems and become obese during their first 13 years of life.
Studies also suggest that the rising rates of attention deficit disorder (ADD) and ADHD in children, as well as autism, may be at least partly due to increased EMF exposure.
The children of the mothers with the higher magnetic field exposure during pregnancy had 2.9 times the risk of developing a neurodevelopmental disorder such as ADHD. Researchers speculate that this may be due to damaged DNA.
Further, because EMFs are known to damage stem cells, in children, that can impair brain development in a way that likely contributes to autism.

Now that you have a better understanding as to how EMFs can cause you harm, it’s time to look at how you can help undo the damage.
The good news is, your body has a built-in repair system that can help repair the damage from EMFs. It’s called the poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase(PARP) family of enzymes.
In short, these critical enzymes are best known their ability to sense and repair DNA damage in your cells.
PARP requires fuel to work, and that fuel is one of the most important coenzymes in your body: nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. PARP uses a lot of NAD+ to repair DNA breaks in your genetic material. In fact, it can use as much as 100 to 150 molecules of NAD+ for every DNA repair it performs.

EMF exposure can cause your cells to become depleted in NAD+, leading to an inability to fuel PARP repair.
When your cells become NAD+ depleted, that affects your mitochondria by lowering an NAD coenzyme called NADH. Your mitochondria need this coenzyme to produce ATP — the energy for your cells and your body's functions.
As PARP sucks up most of your NAD+, your longevity proteins called sirtuins (which also require NAD+) suffer, dramatically speeding up the aging process. PARP also turns on proinflammatory pathways in your body that increase your risk for virtually every chronic disease.

If you choose to disable your home’s Wi-Fi (which I recommend doing), you need to know you’re likely to confront certain challenges (I detail these in EMF*D). Most cable and telephone company modems and routers are Wi-Fi enabled by default and turning the Wi-Fi off isn’t always easy to do.
You may need to contact your cable or telephone company to walk you through the process to disable your Wi-Fi. And because your cable company may automatically update your modem’s software and turn your Wi-Fi back on without you knowing it, you’ll need the information in chapter 7 in EMF*D to assure it is actually disabled.
